Am Theaterfestival in Weiz

Posted by traudljerlich on 24. June 2016

TiSCH (Theater in SCHÖNAU) – Wassertheater2

WOO HOO – A glimpse into CE ideas

Posted by juttajerlich on 8. January 2015

woohooWS 2014/15: Great student participation, great atmosphere, great results … energy felt.

Several projects with a product prototype or even on the market already as a result of previous lecture. Impact of the class is growing. Recommendations from previous classes echos.

I liked this one:

Woo Hoo – We give teachers more time to teach
-> a software used by 16 paying schools and more than 10.000 users.

Student Feedback

“Teams are able to create a higher quality outcome than you could do alone as everyone can submit something and you can support each other. I hope that I can contribute to the group by keeping track of our work and analyzing the process.”
Anna-Sophie

“Not only did we create a (more or less plausible) business plan, but also had the chance to present our idea and receive constructive feedback. Furthermore we learned more about our strengths and weaknesses, and how to use and cope with them. “

Design technology to help us make better decisions

Posted by juttajerlich on 4. October 2014

I regularily read Dan Ariely`s Blog, I particpated in his MOOC and can only recommend everyone to do so. Why? It really helps you to understand human irrationality and why we repeatedly and predictably make the wrong decisions in many aspects of our lives.

This part of his latest blog articles about the Apple Pay question he answered is particularly interesting for the entire industry of technology and innovation. We need to think about designing technology in a way that helps us make better decisions.

oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

nonewwayDear Dan,

Apple recently announced Apple Pay, which will allow iPhone and Apple Watch users to simply wave their gadgets to pay for purchases. How might this technology change our spending habits? Could Apple Pay and other such hassle-free payment mechanisms (such as Amazon’s “1-click ordering”) lead us to spend more—particularly on stuff we don’t need?

—Nikki

The essence of payment is opportunity cost. Every time we face a purchasing decision, we should ask ourselves if getting this one thing is worth giving up the ability to purchase something else, now or in the future.

Different ways of paying make us think differently about those opportunity costs. For example, if we have $20 in cash in our pockets, we will have a hard time not thinking about opportunity cost. If we consider buying a sandwich, we realize that we won’t have money for coffee; if we get a cab, we realize that we won’t have money for dinner. But when we use a credit card or gift certificate, our thinking about opportunity cost will be less natural and prevalent—which means we’re likely to spend more without fully thinking about the consequences.

This is why the general answer to your questions is both yes and no. As you suggest, electronic payment mechanisms can easily lead us to think less about opportunity cost and spend more recklessly. But this doesn’t have to be the case. Electronic payment could be designed in ways that get us to more fully understand our opportunity costs and make more reasonable decisions. Apple Pay and the like could be game-changers, helping us think about our spending much more rigorously than we ever could with cash.

So the questions are: Who is designing these electronic wallets, and for what purpose? Will they be designed to get us to spend more money—or to help us make better decisions? Right now, electronic payments seem to be going down the path of less thinking and more spending—but I hope that at some point, some of the payment companies will change their approach, adopt the perspective of their users and offer electronic payment methods that help us make better financial decisions.

Knowledge disappears

Posted by juttajerlich on 6. January 2014

as soon as you have acquired it.learningPATH

Have you noticed this as well?

It starts out with you wanting to learn something which may seem like a long way to go and a huge task. Depending on what you have in mind, it may really take quite a long time.

After you are done, finished the exam, start practicing and using the knowledge in your daily life and work, it seems effortless to you since you know what you are doing.

The knowledge became part of you and seemingly disappeared. You do not notice any more that you have the abilities you have. This can become an obstacle when you need to “sell” yourself, your expertise and knowledge, for example when job searching, or trying to move up in a company.

Then the ability of being able to look at yourself from a little distance would come in handy. Self reflection is a skill by itself, needs some practice and at best, support from another person.

When we think one step ahead: how about if we would like to help others gain knowledge, teach and mentor people to learn.

This looks like an even bigger challenge as behavioral economist Dan Ariely confirms: Ask Ariely: Do Professors Have to Be Boring?

Why? I think the reasons lies in the fact that the learning path of everyone is different as we are all unique individuals and go different ways to reach our goals.

A good teacher leads the way for you to find your own learning path.

War for Talents

Posted by jjerlich on 9. September 2013

Geeks EuropeQualified and competent talents are missing everywhere

Instead of job portals where huge numbers of applications have to be filtered and HR and talent recruiters overflown with resumes from around the globe, not really knowing how to filter this data, Atlassian, a company from Australia started it’s “Europe, We’re Coming to Steal Your Geeks” campaign.

What lead to this decision: due to a limited supply of software developers in Australia they decided to look for programming talent in Europe. They decked out a bus, conducted interviews and hosted informational meetups at local coffee shops and pubs – all with the purpose of luring highly skilled developers back to Australia’s ‘Silicon Beach’ with a job at Atlassian and an all-expenses-paid relocation package to Sydney.

Does that mean that we have enough skilled talent in Europe?

No, it does not.

AUSTRIA   IT Qualification Study IBW [German]
Institut für Bildungsforschung der Wirtschaft www.ibw.at
“Alumnis of IT HTLs, IT studies on Universities and Universities of Applied Science are lacking.”
SWITZERLAND   ICT-Fachkräftesituation: Bildungsbedarfsprognose 2020 [German]

ICT-Berufsbildung Schweiz  www.ict-berufsbildung.ch
“Need for IT Skills in 2020: 72‘500 persons, lack in 2020: 25‘000 persons.”
GERMANY   Technology Adoption Workforce Issue Study

“45 % of business leaders in Germany believe that internal IT competency does not or only partly satisfy the need of the company.”

MY FACIT

Talent and culture are the key drivers of future success. A company needs to find incredible people who feel passionate about what they do and therefore can create a culture where people feel they can deliver the best work of their careers.

All Generations engaged at WorldSkills 2013

Posted by juttajerlich on 9. July 2013

Our Youth – Our Future

The Worldskills 2013 in Leipzig were an event not only for highly engaged and highly competent youth in 46 professions. It was also a cross-generation event. There were an equal amount of experts committed to mentor and coach their national winners to be able to compete with the best talents of 52 nations.

There were many meetings and conferences that took place in the Conference Center of Leipzig Messe organized and attended by European and OECD leaders about youth (un)employment from across the world.  In this truly global effort, that will be the basis for a continuously engaged platform, you could meet Ministers, Law Makers, CEOs of companies and foundations. They came together to not only speak about the currently very bad situation for youth in many countries but to take action and offer perspectives and a future to their youth.

The focus was put on joining forces, using synergies, learning from other`s mistakes and successes to leverage existing knowledge for changing the way things are. The dual education system which has been an essential part of the national education system in Germany, Switzerland and Austria is believed to be a big part of the solution to low youth unemployment. I attended following conferences during the WorldSkills Competition:

Green Industrial Skills for Sustainable Development

Humanity faces enormous challenges in the sustainability of our current lifestyles and systems. The decisions we take can either move us in the direction of sustainability or contribute to the growing problems. Green Industries are the driver towards sustainability and currently experience a high growth time. It is crucial to have access to the necessary skills to be able to realize the potential growth path.

The conference took place on July 1, 2013 and started with a plenary sessions and keynote addresses from Nobel Peace prize Laureate H.E. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Chairperson National League for Democracy in Myanmar, Ursula Müller from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany, Chakib Jeane and Marcos Pontes from UNIDO and Olga Strietska-Ilina from ILO. The following three panel discussions were dedicated to following topics:

  • Panel 1:  Green Industry Initiative
  • Panel 2:  Skills Development for renewable energy
  • Panel 3:  Worldskills and how to sustain the industry through green skills competition development

It was a very interesting day dominated by the questions of how VET Vocational Education and Training can solve this problem to fill the skills gap detected in this crucial sector.

European Alliance for Apprenticeships” (EAfA)

Please see article about this initiative.

Skilling the future: VET and Workplace learning for Economic Success

This international conference organized by the OECD and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research [BMBF] focused on the role of Vocational and Adult Education as well as Workplace learning as the emerging challenges. After the keynote parallel working groups started and engaged in the following topics

  1. VET and higher education: transition pathways and innovative blends of VET
  2. Systematic development of apprenticeships and workplace learning: changing roles of responsibilities of trainees, employers and social partners
  3. Innovative concepts for making the bridge between school and work

I participated in the working group three and presented the success story of  Cisco Networking Academy – a CSR Program for educational organizations supplying a learning platform with IT Networking and System resources for IT skills development.

Resume
The Worldskills Conference Program 2013 “Our Youth – Our Future” was definitely a highlight of the WorldSkills Competition and will be instrumental to connect stakeholders on a global level to implement policies and programs that improve the situation and give our youth a prospective and positive outlook into the future of their nations.

Cisco Österreich lädt zum Girls in ICT Day – 25. April 2013

Posted by juttajerlich on 10. March 2013

Cisco Österreich, Millennium Tower, 30. & 31. Floor, Handelskai 94 – 96, 1200 Wien

Dear Educators!

Internet is not simply always there. It needs equipment that allows and regulates data transfer and people, who develop, build, sell, install and operate them. CISCO is one of the companies that build those Internet highways. No email, no chat, no facebook, no skype would be possible without Cisco products and services.

On April 25th, International Girls Day 2013, we invite you and your class to our CISCO Office in Vienna for you to see communication technology in action and experience the technology behind the Internet in practice.

You can get an inside view into a company providing equipment and apps that keep the Internet running. There are possibilities to join small workshops about topics like “Secure in the network”, “Social networks” and “How does my PC look from inside“ where you are actively involved.

We are looking forward to your reply and to discuss details about your visit directly with you. I personally hope to be able to meet you in one of our offices.

Cisco Systems International, Avenue des Uttins 5, 1180 Rolle
Cisco Systems @ Swiss Ecole Polytechnique Federale in Lausanne, Route Cantonale, 1015 Lausanne

Chers professeur(e)s!

Sharing my V I S I O N ?

Posted by juttajerlich on 29. February 2012

Many centuries ago great architects were also engineers, philosophers and writers. So interdisciplinarity is not a new concept. Today new technologies and ICT tools open up a broad field of ways of how to innovate and make life better for all. We depend on creative and innovative people to sustain and develop our economy to fulfill the needs of our society.

The Course CREATIVITY ENGINEERING offers participants a chance to learn about their creative potential, understand about the implementation of ideas in a market environment and check how things work out when trying to make an idea become reality in a multidisciplinary team from different cultural backgrounds.

It is my vision to make Creativity Engineering a step forward and make it an event that takes place with partners in different locations on the globe. I am looking for people sharing this vision in universities and companies. Contact me if who want to be part of making sure that we learn how we can use our knowledge and creative potential in the work environment in todays offices in better ways.

Posted by juttajerlich on 24. June 2011
