Please write this down

Posted by juttajerlich on 28. August 2016

When you hear these words, it means that the following statement is important.
Really important. It also means that you are most likely listening to Kane Minkus 🙂

Alessia and Kane Minkus

Since Friday the 3-Day START AT THE TOP Seminar is held in Zurich, Switzerland. The task and goal = empowering business owners to realize their dreams and impact their communities.

It is actually quite funny how these words “please write this down” actually make people write them down. School has engraved the words so deeply into our brains that as soon as the words are said, the intended action follows. Here are a few examples:

  • A business is about helping people.
  • In business positioning is everything.
  • Ideas are worthless – Execution is everything.

Knowing how to translate these statements (most of us know) into practical actions is the key. The key to successful business results.

Today is the 3rd day – TRANSFORMATION DAY.

Magic has been happening all along for the participants: changing mindsets, understanding growth insights and realizing how powerful networking opportunities can actually be when really used.

It is great meeting so many Swiss based entrepreneurs.

Looking forward to further connecting with you …

Mu(r)seums Tag

Posted by traudljerlich on 19. July 2016

Posted by jjerlich on 4. July 2016

Planen Sie Ihre Kampagne! Welches Argument zieht bei wem?

Posted by juttajerlich on 17. June 2016

Looking for people open to share their high impact learning stories @FUN_Basel

Pb056685_kl

——————- v — E N G L I S H — v ——————-

The first FUN.Basel was great – we had about 60 participants and a great atmosphere where people – speakers and visitors – could really share the experiences and what they did learn from them. It was wonderful to have a one page article in Basler Zeitung about FuckupNights and our event that day which brought us a few more non-registered people.

We have the next event dates planned now:

Does one of them fit into your calendar?
Should we reserve a speaker slot for you?

Speak to us about a Speaker Slot – we will contact you:

The Art of Learning from Mistakes

Posted by juttajerlich on 19. April 2016

Book your seatWeil Fehler zum Erfolg führen
Because errors are on your way to success

We cordially invite you to

the first ever FuckUpNight in Basel

12.May 2016

The Basel region is Switzerland’s most dynamic and innovative economic area. Located at the heart of Europe, right next to Germany and France, is is also known for the incomparable art and architecture scene and its lively approach to life.

Trilingual – English, German and French.

Here are the links you need for more details, reserving your seats, joining the FUN.Basel community to engage in your City and be ready for future dates.

Why are we doing this?

————– Take the time to think about this ————–

How do you define success?
How do you look at mistakes and errors?

… exactly … it is a question of definition and interpretation.

A short research leads to the definition of a “fuckup” as a serious or severe mistake. A quick look at history of the word “failure” shows that the origin of its meaning was “non-occurrence”, it’s use changed over time.

Looking at the word FAIL as an acronym is my choice:

FAIL = First Attempt In Learning

Etwas … im Entstehen

Komponisten Trio

:: Raitis Grigalis
:: Andreas Schwarz
:: George Fleury

Hard choices

Posted by juttajerlich on 1. December 2015

It is interesting … some topics I stumble across again and again at different points in time – this probably means that I have not yet digested it or taken a stand on it for myself.

I think that some things just take times to evolve and grow and digest … in this hectic times we rarely have this time though. I need to have the time or more so take the time, there is no choice – because it is not in my control how long it takes me – my body, mind and spirit –  to go through it.

I finally understood that I need to be patient with myself if I want to evolve, grow and develop into the me that I have in mind.

The topic of hard choices is in the center of my thought – again – here is how Ruth Chang’s talk caught and fired my thoughts:

51 Karin klHard choices are hard because the alternatives are not equally good – one is not better than the other.

She clearly explains why: there are two worlds we all move around in.

A comparison of alternatives is usually based on numbers and logic – with scientific quantities.

In the world of values, quantification is not done by numbers.

We need to introduce new ways of measuring …  Ruth proposes: … that the alternatives are “on a par.”

When alternatives are on a par, it may matter very much which you choose, but one alternative isn’t better than the other. Rather, the alternatives are in the same neighborhood of value, in the same league of value, while at the same time being very different in kind of value. That’s why the choice is hard.”

There is no best alternative.

Knowing this alone makes the choice somehow easier, because you can not be wrong.

Are you are someone who fears to be wrong? You can not be wrong.

“Understanding hard choices in this way uncovers something about ourselves we didn’t know. Each of us has the power to create reasons.”

What reasons for choosing one or the other alternative do you make?

Or are you one of the people who don’t exercise their normative powers in hard choices? Are you a drifter?

“Drifters allow the world to write the story of their lives. They let mechanisms of reward and punishment — pats on the head, fear, the easiness of an option — to determine what they do.”

I choose to not be a drifter.

„In bester Gesellschaft“

Posted by juttajerlich on 29. August 2015

Weihnachtsspuren – Traces of Christmas

Posted by juttajerlich on 29. December 2014

WP_20141226_001

Thank you very much Leypoldt family for welcoming me this warmhearted. The most wonderful Christmas present imaginable.

Here is one of the poems we read on the 24th of December just before singing Holy Night Silent Night. It is coming close to capturing what Christmas means to me.

Wenn mir einer die Frage stellt
nach Weihnachten in unserer Welt
muss ich nicht schweigen
will ich ihm zeigen, was damals begann
als Weihnachten seinen Anfang nahm.

Wo einer dem anderen neu vertraut
und mit ihm eine Brücke baut
um Hass und Feindschaft zu überwinden,
da kannst du Weihnachtspuren finden.

Wo einer am Ende nicht verzagt
und einen neuen Anfang wagt,
um Leid und Trauer zu überwinden,
da kannst du Weihnachtspuren finden.

Wo einer im Dunkeln nicht verstummt,
sondern das Lied der Hoffnung summt,
um Angst und Stille zu überwinden,
da kannst du Weihnachtspuren finden.

Wo einer das Unbequeme wagt
und offen seine Meinung sagt,
um Schein und Lüge zu überwinden,
da kannst du Weihnachtspuren finden.

Wo einer gegen die Strömung schwimmt,
und fremde Lasten auf sich nimmt,
um Not und Elend zu überwinden,
da kannst du Weihnachtspuren finden.

Wo einer dich aus der Trägheit weckt
und einen Weg mit dir entdeckt,
um hohe Mauern zu überwinden,
da kannst du Weihnachtspuren finden.

When someone asks me a question
about Christmas in our world
I do not remain silent
and want to explain what it means
when Christmas starts to take place.

Where someone trusts another person again
and builds a bridge with him or her
to overcome hate and hostility,
there you can find traces of Christmas.

Where someone does not give up hope
and dares to try again one more time,
to overcome pain and sorrow,
there you can find traces of Christmas.

Where some does not fall silent in the dark,
but is humming the song of hope,
to overcome fear and silence,
there you can find traces of Christmas.

Where someone dares to do the inconvenient
and voices his or her opinion openly,
to overcome illusions and lies,
there you can find traces of Christmas.

Where someone is swimming against the current,
and takes on others burden,
to overcome poverty and hardship,
there you can find traces of Christmas.

Where someone wakes you from your inaction,
and discovers a new pathway with you,
to overcome high walls,
there you can find traces of Christmas.

From an unknown author

Ich habe den Faden weitergeführt … I think I have something to add

Wo einer nicht die Augen verschliesst,
und tief drinnen den Schmerz mitfühlt,
können Wunden der Seele langsam verschwinden,
da kannst du Weihnachtspuren finden.
Where someone does not close his or her eyes,
and deep inside feels the pain of another,
for the soul wound to be able to slowly heal,
there you can find traces of Christmas.

Haben Sie etwas hinzuzufügen?   Do you have something to add?

New season – great ideas

Posted by juttajerlich on 1. November 2014

Vienna, 13.10.2014

WP_20140830_004The Creativity Engineering Course at the Vienna University of Technology is on again. After the traditional TEAM FINDING phase that takes place online and offline, teams have taken their seats.

This is the 8th year. Registrations keep on raising: this time we reached the mark of 250 which lead us to the highest number of projects and students in the course ever.

I am looking forward to working with the teams. It will be a challenge with such a large number of projects and students. A challenge that I am willing to take, asking for support and help from people interested in helping ideas to grow.

Interesting and diverse projects, this year almost all of them are based on IT or IT related technologies. We had an entertaining TEAM CASTING event with great discussion of the ideas and a rating from the entire class for each idea.

Discussed feedback from our session:
It would be great to have more input from students studying social sciences to complement the teams.

Therefore we are looking for

  • Students who want to join in and lend the teams a hand or ear
  • Educators who want to join in to discuss a collaborative approach for the next session

Here is a selection of the projects

:: Walking in the past        :: Coffee personality check        :: Awake Alarm

:: Multi-Codebar Reader         :: Digital legacy        :: Noise cancelling        :: Empathic phone

:: The Bridge        :: First aid furniture        :: Voucher app for charity        :: Order Button

“Permission Networking”

Posted by juttajerlich on 24. September 2014

For finding inspiration and learning from others I follow a couple of blogs on a regular basis. I found them during several years of following like minded people in social media platforms, newsletters or on their personal blogs.

One of them is James Altucher. He is quite interesting, his writing style is not fully what I prefer but when you stick to it and read his full articles I usually find something that is completing a puzzle I am putting together, confirming an opinion that I thought only I have or is a building block for something I am working on.

Jutta JerlichI want to present this term to you “Permission Networking” he coined.

I am doing a lot of permission networking.  In my network I often come across two people I know who I think should meet each other. The thought might come just like that. Sometimes it is triggered, when a persons asks me a question –  I usually know just the right person for this specific question. This is nothing new for me, even before the Internet. [Yes, I still remember a time without the Internet.] Now with social media platforms and after having worked internationally for many years, this has increased tremendously.

So if there are two people I think should meet each other, I will approach the person and ask for the permission to connect them: “I know XY who I think shares a common interest  with you. This is why … . ” In the majority of cases, I will make the connection.

I fully agree with James reasoning behind this, he says:

“My network is not the list of how many people I know. THE STRENGTH OF MY NETWORK IS HOW WELL EVERYONE I KNOW HELPS EACH OTHER. Most people don’t know this important principle.”

Spread the word so that more people more people know this important principle !

Thanks

17. May in Oslo

Posted by juttajerlich on 23. May 2014

From my dear Friends Marc & Ragni and their newsletter about their activities with friends & family – shortened though.

My title:
We all have our heritage but how we design the here and now is up to us.

Thanks for sharing this with me.

HISTORY

200 years ago in 1814, the Norwegian people drafted their current constitution. It allowed them a regime of relative autonomy from the Swedes, a preamble to the total independence they could not yet afford but finally obtained 91 years later (1905) when they fetched the first king of the current dynasty, a Dane who married an English woman.*

* It took their recent riches of North Sea oil to elevate them from their status of country bumpkins in the eyes of their Swedish neighbors headed by French-born Napoleon relative Bernadotte, renamed Karl Johann, as well as the Danes who ruled Norway for over 400 years.

BEFORE THE PARADE

P1690220
One of 117 schools marching to Karl Johanns Gate parade, from 3 directions.
It’s mid-morning and they’ve been up early to march in their neighborhood.
A family unit. Mother and daughter have the same folkloric dress.
The men, if not dressed in traditional costume (bunade), wear a ribbon at the lapel.
Joyfully waving a flag is the rule.

The crowd was extraordinary, on account of:
– the day fell on a Saturday,
– the 200th anniversary,
– perfect weather.

THE PARADE
The parade is primarily in the main street leading to the king’s castle where the king and his family will stand in the balcony for the 3.5 hours of its duration. The street is named after Karl Johann, the Swedish king who strongly opposed and delayed the independence of Norway, How tolerant for the Norwegians to not have renamed the street !… As soon as Morocco became independent from the French in 1956, almost all the streets, and some cities, instantly lost their French name.
The parade is opened by a military squad, the Royal Guard.

P1690233
According to a friend, it’s second only to Russians, in terms of marching with acrobatics with their weapons. Each of the 117 schools marches to the same line-up:
– First, the placard identifying the school:
– Then comes the dozen or so large flags:
– Then, often comes the band, sometimes with baton-twirling majorettes:

You can tell the high school senior by their black cap.

– Elementary school kids, ushered by adults, close the march:

P1690262 - Version 2

We even get to cheer the adult children and grand-children of the friend who hosted us:
10-year old Martin is first of a kind, playing the electronic guitar,
on a leash to his father Halvor carrying the guitar battery and speaker…
40-year old Helge returns our cheers.
He’s months into a new start-up venture.
The handicapped share in the party atmosphere.

THE “BUNAD” Folkloric Dress

Each county has its own design with possible tweaks within a county.
Ragni did not bring her bunad because its bulky and heavy. Back as 1982 she started embroidering one for our daughter Anne. A friend helped her finish the embroidery and the piece is now being expertly assembled, a major task which requires experienced hands.

P1690352 - Version 2  P1690337 - Version 2  P1690379 - Version 3

A white bunad is a rarity.

P1690382 - Version 2 P1690383

Continued in the next message:
– The high percentage of immigrants,
– The crowd milling around after the parade.

BRINGING THE IMMIGRANTS INTO THE FAMILY
It’s impressive to see so many immigrants in the parade, a testimony of Norwegian tolerance and forsight. They come from Pakistan, Somalia, Ethiopia, among others.

In our local small town library, French books are only available on a rotation basis; yet there is a section aimed at a bunch of Ethiopians temporarily camped nearby for orientation. Mind you this is no ordinary refugee camp but a posh mountain resort hotel gone bankrupt. These dark skinned Africans must nevertheless feel pretty isolated and out-of-their element in the montainous countryside, not to mentin the rigor of the climate (not only the cold but also the darkness of Winter).

P1690254 - Version 3  P1690349 - Version 3

POST-PARADE MILLING AROUND

Cars were banned from the whole downtown area. It took our host 1h30minn to exit their parking, and they even paid $50 for the privilege.
Cost of living is very high in Norway. How about $6 for a single avocado ?!… We brought our own from California, apples and nuts too !….

By means of cell phone we manage to meet friends, in spite of the crowd

Years ago, as part of the AFS high school student exchange, the Teljes (pronounced “Tel-yeh”) hosted the daughter of Palo Alto friends, for one year in a Norwegian mountain town near our cabin.

The dagger is part of a man’s uniform.  These lovelies enjoy an enviable status in Norway.
A minimum 40% of corporation board seats is reserved for them.
The current Prime Minister is a woman.
A representative of the Lapp people, an ethnic group of reindeer-herding nomads in the artic North. They enjoy official autonomy and maintain their own language.

We once knew one in California who addressed me as “De Gaulle” and derided the Norwegians as “lazy” !…

Wings for Life – Uplifting Experience

Posted by juttajerlich on 6. May 2014

The Wings for Life World Run is the first time ever that a global race took place in 33 countries and 34 locations at the same time. For me it was the proof that we can all do something together at the same time. It was the proof that the technology we have at our fingertips can actually bring us together and unite our minds and spirits for one cause.

This is just wonderful and a very powerful realization.

How did the idea for participating in this event get started?

Having worked with teachers and students for many years, I started to hear from teachers over and over that students do not read their study materials any more, everything is too long or too much. There is no motivation to learn. There is too much information out there and it is hard to choose. In contrast, in a conversation with a friend, he was telling me about the motivation – no actually much more than that – the dedication of Iron Man competitors or Marathon runners. I started to think about how I could find a way to put such kind of passion into learning. I went on a quest to discuss this with students and they told me that it would be great for them to see real life implementations of networking technology they can study and learn from.

Then the Wings for Life World Run project was presented to me and it made “klick”.

In technical terminology the technology that made this event possible is called nowadays called Internet-of-Everything Technology and Networking Technology is at its heart. I am supporting and promoting the Networking Technology Education Program for the IT Solutions provider Cisco Systems, the Cisco Networking Academy. This Education Program is in 165 countries and with its 1.000.000 students worldwide it is called the largest classroom of the world.

Such an event happening was the invitation from life, the unique opportunity to connect people with passion to learners by allowing them to take a look behind the scenes to understand the technological solution and see in front of their own eyes what it takes in terms of team work and leadership to implement a global race. To have this opportunity alone is great but there was another challenge I added. We shared the information and knowledge gained with the larger international network of learners in the Networking Academy program in many countries.

Here are my reflections about how it all went:

Did the experience prove true to your expectations?

The answer is a definite YES.

It is actually more than a Yes, because it exceeded my expectations. Being able to meet the people who had the idea of a World Run and the huge team who made it reality is more than I could imagine. Each single person is fully committed to making the event a success with his or her heart and mind. This energy will touch you. It will inspire you.

Every group member took his own time to feel the energy in its full power.
“Wow, this is exactly what I would love to do as a job …”
“… you started your company with 25?
“I need to plan for this next time … .”
“ … thanks … it is great to be here.”

It is so exceptionally motivating to see a world that is doing the run together as ONE. Being part of this effort by making it a learning experience adds another level that should help to unite the youth in making the world theirs.

Did the students really learn what you expected them to learn?

Our group with Felix, Maximilian, Ivica, Nathan and Kevin was just great. The group was diverse – they were all from different backgrounds, with different interests and skills, at different stages in their life – and at the same time they were all ambitious, open to each other’s views and ideas which helped immensely to quickly find a way to work as a team. It was amazing to feel how sad we all were when our time together was over, including me. They all learned to communicate and share their knowledge in a team and for a larger network. A skill that is so important for any job in life, but rarely ever taught in school or university.

What was the most important for me: I could see the spark in their eyes when they fully understood the essence of my message. How do you know when that happens? Usually a person is rather quiet at that moment and you can literally see this moment of understanding, this insight in their eyes and facial expressions.

What was not so good or needs further improvement?

My real world learning activity was not that easy to explain. It is a complex collaboration on more than one level between five stakeholders who could not have done this alone. It is only possible to be successful if all partners bring their part to the table. Multi stakeholder partnerships are hard to explain and require not only the right attitude but also the ability to recognize an opportunity at the right point in time and in the fitting context.

It is just hard to explain to someone. It is hard to put in a few words. We live in a time of information overflow and people do not (have the time to) read any more. Marketing and Communication have to be short, precise and if possible, less than 140 characters, to be used in twitter messages to catch the interest of readers. Well, this is extraordinarily difficult when trying to explain a project that requires a multi stakeholder partnership to realize.

It seems that people are not able any more to identify opportunities and projects that are worth their time and effort. Continuing this work I will have to find better ways to explain the opportunities or find different words or images to make people understand their significance.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH
I want to thank each and everyone who did take the time to read the materials and to speak to me. Each single person who involved him or her in this project did so because of a personal relationship with me or another person I personally know or work with.

Thanks for trusting in me and my initiative.
I will build on this foundation we created for future collaboration and the next Wings for Life World Run on the 3rd of May 2015.

Sick of working alone? In need of an office?

Posted by juttajerlich on 12. March 2014

CoWorking SpaceLooking for an office is not what it used to be.

If you rephrase the question or task at hand, depending on how you define this for yourself, it can be reworded to looking for a desk, a shared office or in new terms a co-working space.

As an EPU in Austria – EPU stands for Ein Personen Unternehmen which is a OPC One-Person-Company – finding a place to work in an office setting rather than in a coffee house or at home.

It is not only a step ahead if you do not work in your pajamas any more, but brings a manifold set of advantages:

  • lower costs than your own office
  • other goal-oriented people to talk to
  • a community of people who are potentially a network
  • motivation, entrepreneurial spirit and drive … which could very well be the most important factor of all

Community creates momentum

This movement was born in Vienna more than ten years ago, when universities started to build their entrepreneurial centers. It is great to see that the spark is spreading big time now. Check out the VIDEO Startup City of Vienna

Are there any startup movements, co working spaces, community hubs in your city?

Where can you take your ideas in your city?

Looking forward to your comments and feedback

Stärker als man denkt

Posted by juttajerlich on 9. February 2014

Just do it !

Knowledge disappears

Posted by juttajerlich on 6. January 2014

as soon as you have acquired it.learningPATH

Have you noticed this as well?

It starts out with you wanting to learn something which may seem like a long way to go and a huge task. Depending on what you have in mind, it may really take quite a long time.

After you are done, finished the exam, start practicing and using the knowledge in your daily life and work, it seems effortless to you since you know what you are doing.

The knowledge became part of you and seemingly disappeared. You do not notice any more that you have the abilities you have. This can become an obstacle when you need to “sell” yourself, your expertise and knowledge, for example when job searching, or trying to move up in a company.

Then the ability of being able to look at yourself from a little distance would come in handy. Self reflection is a skill by itself, needs some practice and at best, support from another person.

When we think one step ahead: how about if we would like to help others gain knowledge, teach and mentor people to learn.

This looks like an even bigger challenge as behavioral economist Dan Ariely confirms: Ask Ariely: Do Professors Have to Be Boring?

Why? I think the reasons lies in the fact that the learning path of everyone is different as we are all unique individuals and go different ways to reach our goals.

A good teacher leads the way for you to find your own learning path.
