Kleine Pause

So eine kleine Pause vom Alltag – 2 Nächte im Wellnesshotel, ein verlängertes Wochenende – ist wunderbar.

Wie man es auch nennt – Tapetenwechsel, Kurzurlaub, verlängertes Wochenende – nach der Meinung von vielen, mit denen ich darüber gesprochen haben, bringt es mehr Erholung als zwei Wochen Urlaub.

Dieser Gedanke ist neu für Sie? Hier habe ich sogar eine Anleitung für den nächsten Kurzurlaub gefunden.

In Deutschland gibt es sogar Sonderregelungen für eine Geltendmachung von Reisekosten in der Steuererklärung. Wenn man also beruflich viel unterwegs ist, bietet es sich an, einfach ein paar Tage privaten Kurzurlaub hinten dran zu hängen.

Ja wirklich! Man kann privaten Urlaub von der Steuer absetzen.

Seit der Aufhebung der sogenannten “Aufteilungs- respektive Abzugsverbot” aufgrund eines Urteil des Bundesfinanzhofes aus September 2009 (AZ GrS 1/06), nachdem es lediglich bei einer ausschließlichen Dienstreise Geld vom Staat zurück gab, verhält es sich seit 2010 anders.

• Für die steuerliche Geltendmachung muss die Reise aus dienstlichen Gründen angetreten werden. Dienstliche Reisekosten sind absetzbar, wenn der berufliche Anteil der Reise über 10 Prozent liegt. Die Kosten werden in Dienstreisekosten und Privatvergnügen aufgeteilt. Reisekosten für weitere Personen müssen natürlich herausgerechnet werden.
• Sind mehr als 90 Prozent der Reise dienstlich veranlasst, gibt es dafür den vollen Steuerabzug, sofern der Arbeitgeber die Kosten nicht übernimmt.
  Kann nachgewiesen werden, dass man trotz “Leerlauf” beruflich aktiv war, zum Beispiel aufgrund von Vor- und Nachbereiten von Terminen, kann die Reise zu über 90 Prozent dienstlich veranlasst sein. In diesem Fall wird das Finanzamt die Kosten in vollem Umfang erstatten.
• Handelt es sich um gemischt veranlasste Reisen, gelten für beruflich bedingte Sprachreisen verschiedene Sonderregelungen.

Das ist eine echt schöne Regelung – damit hat man auch wirklich die Möglichkeit, dem Stress zumindest etwas entgegen zu wirken.  Nützen Sie den Anlass, das Thema Gesundheit und Wohlbefinden wieder mehr in den Mittelpunkt in Ihrem Leben zu rücken.

Looking for an office is not what it used to be.

If you rephrase the question or task at hand, depending on how you define this for yourself, it can be reworded to looking for a desk, a shared office or in new terms a co-working space.

As an EPU in Austria – EPU stands for Ein Personen Unternehmen which is a OPC One-Person-Company – finding a place to work in an office setting rather than in a coffee house or at home.

It is not only a step ahead if you do not work in your pajamas any more, but brings a manifold set of advantages:

Nicht ausgedrückte Wut und Dankbarkeit

Seit 90 Jahren bewegt sich ganz Japan morgens zur Radiogymnastik.
Wenn nicht selbst erlebt, hätte ich dies nicht als reale Wirklichkeit empfinden können. Gefühlsmäßig erzeugt der Anblick großer Menschengruppen, die den Aufforderungen einer einzigen Stimme folgen, die Einnerung an ähnliche Bilder aus dem Geschichtsunterricht vom Mitmachen ab.

Die Zeit meines Lebens, die ich in Japan verbracht habe, wird mich immer mit dem Land und den Menschen, den Freunden und Kontakten verbinden.
Was ich dort gelernt habe, wird mich immer begleiten.
Was mich dort frustriert hat und zuinnerst verstummen hat lassen, wird mich immer sehr traurig stimmen.

Es wird mich antreiben und erinnern, dass ich mich weiter Veränderungen und Verbesserungen einsetzen werde, die soviele Leben wie nur möglich berühren.

Aus Unwissen: Im Frühjahr 2011 tranken 2,5 Millionen Menschen 8 Tage lang Wasser, dass mit radioaktivem Jod belastet war. Bis heute hat die Anlage Probleme mit radioaktivem Cäsium.

The $4 Million Teacher – Hagwons in South Korea

This article has a few elements and arguments I was very happy to read about. Even better it would be if many other would be read the article and conclude that they are well worth thinking about.

“Tutoring services are growing all over the globe, Sometimes called shadow education systems, they mirror the mainstream system, offering after-hours classes in every subject—for a fee. But nowhere have they achieved the market penetration and sophistication of hagwons in South Korea, where private tutors now outnumber schoolteachers.”

From my own experience I got to know the ones in Japan, called Gakushū juku 学習塾 which have a similar status in society and among students. They are indispensable for many who do not succeed in passing the university entry exams which take place only one a year at the first try.

“Such a shadow education system is both exciting and troubling. Students essentially go to school twice—once during the day and then again at night at the tutoring academies. It is a relentless grind.”

“When attempting to look at the quality of education delivered it is surprisingly hard to answer this question. Research undertaken worldwide is suggesting that the quality of after-school lessons matters more than the quantity. Leading to the fact that the most affluent kids can afford one-on-one tutoring with the most popular instructors, while others attend inferior hagwons with huge class sizes and less reliable instruction—or after-hours sessions offered free by their public schools.”

“The really good teachers are hard to retain—and hard to manage. You need to protect their egos,” says Lee Chae-yun, who owns a chain of five hagwons in Seoul called Myungin Academy.

“Students are the customers,”

“In South Korea, if parents aren’t engaged, that is considered a failure of the educators, not the family.”

This is an interesting statement and here is how this works in Korea: “Once students enroll, the school embeds itself in families’ lives. Parents get text messages when their children arrive at the academies each afternoon; then they get another message relaying students’ progress. Two to three times a month, teachers call home with feedback. Every few months, the head of the school telephones, too.”

Performance surveys are conducted throughout the hagwon schools and by the Korean Educational Development Institute. Performance evaluations are typically based on following points, including questions asked and rated

• number of students sign up for their class
• students’ test-score growth
• passion of the teacher
• how well prepared is the teacher
• respectfulness of students’ opinions
• treating all students fairly

It has to be noted that the satisfaction surveys are given to students and parents.

“Policy makers and planners should…ask why parents are willing to invest considerable sums of money to supplement the schooling received from the mainstream,” he writes. “At least in some cultures, the private tutors are more adventurous and client-oriented.”

“The only solution is to improve public education,” says Mr. Kim, the millionaire teacher, echoing what the country’s education minister and dozens of other Korean educators told me. If parents trusted the system, the theory goes, they wouldn’t resort to paying high fees for extra tutoring.

“To create such trust, Mr. Kim suggests paying public-school teachers significantly more money according to their performance—as hagwons do. Then the profession could attract the most skilled, accomplished candidates, and parents would know that the best teachers were the ones in their children’s schools—not in the strip mall down the street.”

“No country has all the answers. But in an information-driven global economy, a few truths are becoming universal: Children need to know how to think critically in math, reading and science; they must be driven; and they must learn how to adapt, since they will be doing it all their lives. These demands require that schools change, too—or the free market may do it for them.”

12 nicaraguanische Bananenarbeiter und deren Klage gegen den weltgrößten Obstunternehmer Dole. Eine spannende Chronik eines Gerichtsthof-Dramas, dass nach und nach die vielen Schichten der globalen Nahrungsmittelpolitik und der Dynamik zwischen der Ersten und Dritten Welt enthüllt. Laufende Kameras im Gerichtssaal und Interviews mit dem Anwalt Dominguez und den Klägern ziehen den Zuschauer mitten in die Geschichte hinein.

Bananas documents the history of a lawsuit brought by Nicaraguan banana plantation workers who were allegedly made sterile by Dole’s use of the pesticide DBCP. The Tellez v. Dole Food trial is considered to be a landmark case in the history of workers’ rights. On behalf of twelve Nicaraguan banana workers Juan “Accidentes” Dominguez is tackling Dole Food in a ground-breaking legal battle for their use of a banned pesticide that was known by the company to cause sterility.

Interestingly it the movie was removed from the prestigious Documentary Competition at the Los Angeles Film Festival. In fact, Dole went to court to file an injunction to stop the film from being shown. The judge threw it out, saying that she “will not consider any request for prior restraint on free speech.” Director Fredrik Gertten immediately declared in his impassioned introduction to the screening that he did not endorse the statement of the Festival. This elicited a huge cheer from the audience, even though nobody had yet seen the film.

Die Kluft zwischen engagierten Herstellern und jenen, die an den eigenen Versprechen scheitern, wird immer größer.

Highlights:
– Weiterhin führend ist Nokia, mein persönlicher Handyfavorit aus Finnland.
– Panasonic hat als erster Hersteller eine Initiative zur freiwilligen Rücknahme und zum Recycling seiner Fernseher in Indien gestartet.
– Die RoHS Richtlinie beschränkt gefährliche Materialien in Elektronikprodukten innerhalb der EU. Eine Überarbeitung ist geplant.

Ja, eigentlich schon. Aber in der heutigen Zeit stimmt das oft schon nicht mehr. Stress im Urlaub, Besichtigungen und die Anreisewege dazwischen lassen nicht viel Zeit übrig, in der man das Land oder die Stadt wirklich so von Mensch zu Mensch kennenlernen kann. Und teuer ist es natürlich auch: Flug, Hotel, Essen im Restaurant – von der Summe ist man dann oft selbst überrascht.
